Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island offers diverse habitats, dynamic processes and superb support facilities. You are in the field from the moment you step outside the lab! SML is committed to world-class marine science research and has a long history of data collection (intertidal, oceanic, and terrestrial) and frequent publications.
Science at Shoals
Long-term studies of Appledore Island's intertidal zone, ornithological research on resident gull populations, seal colony surveys to assess population numbers and health, terrestrial transects, and more. SML research projects are under the direction of our faculty, alumni, and visiting researchers.
Undergraduate Research Opportunities
SML offers paid internships to undergraduates in three categories: biological research, science education, and sustainable engineering. Interns live and work on Appledore Island for up to 10 weeks each summer. The Shoals Research Apprenticeship emphasizes research project design and methodology.
Scientist-In-Residence
Shoals Scientist-in-Residence Fellowships (Shoals SIRF) support early career and postdoctoral scientists for up to three-month residential fellowships. Fellows receive financial support for residential research time at SML that can be used for data analysis, manuscript preparation, experimentation, collaboration, etc.
Visiting Researchers
Shoals Marine Laboratory encourages scientists (faculty, students, independent researchers) to take advantage of study opportunities created by unique intertidal, subtidal and terrestrial habitats found at the Isles of Shoals, and use the facilities of SML on Appledore Island as a base.

Research Opportunities
